Brexit’s 6 Ws and how the wealthy British elite always gets what it wants!

“I keep six honest serving-men

They taught me all I knew

Their names are What and Why and When

And How and Where and Who.”

Rudyard Kipling

As Brussels was working on the new EU law that aims to end British tax-dodging practices within its member states, the single market and the customs union, wealthy tax-dodging media tycoons campaigned to get the UK out of the EU.

In the year 1902, Rudyard Kipling wrote: “The Elephant’s Child”, whereby he identified What, Why, When, How, Where and Who as his “six honest serving-men” that helped him determine the truth.

Therefore, whenever someone seeks the truth, one needs to address the following questions:

1. What happened?

2. When did it happen?

3. Who supported it?

4. Why did it happen?

5. Where did it take place?

6. How did it happen?

The “six honest serving-men” or the “6 Ws” constitutes a proven method applied to determine the truth, by identifying the motive by determining the answers to the questions What, Why, When, How, Where and Who.

The following text investigates Brexit’s “6 Ws” that seems to suggest that the new EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive is the main reason why the UK is leaving the EU.

1. What happened before the EU referendum?

After the EU bailed out Greece, the value of the EURO plummeted, threatening the economic stability of the Eurozone.

In 2010, the French Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde provided Greek authorities information on the massive tax avoidance that accounted for almost €27 billion of uncollected annual tax revenues, which almost equals the annual EU rescue loan.

Since Greek authorities failed to prevent tax avoidance, the European Union decided to protect the fiscal and economic stability of its member states by bringing an end to tax-avoiding practices from companies and individuals that generate income within the EU countries.

Speaking at the G20 summit press conference, in the year 2011, the French President, Nicola Sarkozy declared that tax havens will no longer be tolerated, warning countries, such as the UK, that if they continue to protect them, they will be outcast by the developed economies.

2. When did the EU referendum take place?

There’s a striking coincidence between David Cameron’s momentous EU referendum decisions and key developments of the new EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive.

In 2012, the European Commission produced their action plan to clamp down on tax avoidance, and within a month, David Cameron announced that he changed his mind and that he favours an EU referendum; and

In 2016, the European Commission produced the first draft of the EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive and within a month, David Cameron announced the date for the EU referendum.

3. Who supported the Leave campaign?

Tax-dodgers are greedy individuals who couldn’t care less if British people are subjected to harsh austerity measures, or are forced to live from food banks or lose their NHS, yet ahead of the EU referendum they became extremely generous and contributed vast sums of money to the Leave camp.

Prominent individuals that donated to the Leave campaign, and have been implicated in tax-avoiding practices, include Lord Farmer who donated £300,000, Peter Cruddas who donated £350,000, Lord Bamford who donated £673,000, Crispin Odey who donated £873,288, Lord Edmiston who donated £1,000,000, Peter Hargreaves who donated £3,200,000, and Arron Banks who donated £8,106,375.

Even Nigel Farage opposed the new EU law that aims to end tax-avoiding practices.

At the European Parliament, Nigel Farage reminded his fellow MEPs that tax avoidance is perfectly legal in the UK and that they shouldn’t drive a wedge between the UK and its tax havens:

“Thank you. Well, there is a great degree of unity here this morning, with a common enemy – rich people, successful companies evading tax, which of course is a problem. Avoiding tax, which is not illegal, but it gives this whole chamber this morning a high moral tone. And as Mr Barroso says it is all about the perception of fairness. Because there is the added bonus of course that it drives a wedge between the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and the Caymans.”

4. Why the remain campaign failed to secure sufficient votes?

Brexit happened because after failing to secure a special status for British tax-avoiding practices within the EU, the British Prime Minister David Cameron decided:

1. To call the EU referendum, after the European Commission revealed their first draft for the new EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive;

2. Not to inform the British voters that if they voted to remain in the EU, the UK would have to implement the new EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive and bring an end to the ongoing harsh austerity measures.

If only David Cameron informed the British Public that by remaining in the EU, the British government would have to implement the new EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive, collect taxes from the wealthy tax-dodgers before they left the EU territory, and bring an end to the ongoing austerity measures, his Remain campaign would have secured the majority of “In” votes.

But then again, the apple doesn’t fall from the tree, and later it turned out that David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, who inherited over £2,300,000 from his father, Ian, who exploited British tax havens.

5. Where did the EU referendum take place?

Brexit took place in the UK, a country that which is proud of being the world’s fifth largest economy, but at the same time, its nation is subjected to austerity measures and food banks.

And there’s a perfect explanation for this.

Governments that turn a blind eye on tax evasion or tax avoidance, have no other option, but to introduce austerity measures, depriving the regular taxpayer of the services they paid for.

Similar to the ones in Greece, the UK authorities failed to collect due taxes mounting up to £16,000,000,000, whereby tax evasion and tax avoidance account for £10,600,000,000 and criminal attacks account for £5,100,000,000.

Of course, tax avoidance is legal in the UK, but if we were to remain in the EU, the single market and the customs union, the UK would have to implement the new EU laws, such as the new EU Anti Tax Avoidance Directive, which would end the removal of capital gains from the EU member state to another low tax jurisdiction, such as a British tax haven, without paying an exit charge.

The British overseas territories are part of the UK, but not part of the EU, therefore, if the UK remained in the EU, they would have to tax assets before they are transferred to the British offshore tax havens, which currently isn’t the case.

6. How did the wealthy elite get desired result?

It seems that the British elite is very fond of George Orwell’s “1984”, and turned it into reality, whereby the invisible decision makers, “The Party” turned our democracies into “Oceania” and MSM into “The Thought Police”, whose role is to inflict fear upon the British people.

Every time the tax-free assets of the wealthy British are threatened by the EU or a British politician, “The Thought Police”, such as the pro-Brexit newspapers unleash the fear virus.

Coincidentally, the Pro-Brexit newspapers are owned by wealthy tax-dodgers, including a Lord and two Sirs, such as:

1. Rupert Murdoch who owns The Sun;

2. Lord Rothermere who owns The Daily Mail;

3. Richard Desmond who owns The Express; and

4. Barclay brothers who own The Telegraph.

In the past, “The Thought Police”, such as The Sun, Daily Mail, Express and Telegraph have always endorsed the Conservative party.

Yet, when John Major introduced the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 that aimed to tax noble wealthy landowners, “The Thought Police” switched the party and backed the Labour party and Tony Blair who introduced inheritance tax breaks to wealthy landowners if they provided public rights of way through their land.

    I do think Tax avoidance comes into it but it is related to the wider issue of Money Laundering, the Panama Papers, and The Military-Industrial Complex.
    Jo COx’s Murder is relevant to this question also.

    Taxation and Government spending is weakly related at best ( Ruml) where there is a Sovereign currency issuer. This is at its heart tied to Monetary Sovereignty rather than Rich Donors supporting in or out. It’s about Money creation hegemony.
